While a true baseline of brain function in psychiatric patients is near-impossible to obtain, reference values can still be measured by comparing images gathered from patients before and after treatment. By comparing the first experimental task to the second, as well as to the control group, the study authors observed that the brain region most significantly activated by the task requiring phonological storage was the supramarginal gyrii. This result was backed up by previous literature observations of functional deficits in patients with damage in this area.
To sum, functional integration supports and links the clinical (micro-level), professional and the organisational integration (meso-level) dimensions within a system (macro-level). Compared to rs-fMRI, tasking-state fMRI (ts-fMRI) has been largely used to identify functional activities evoked by specific cognitive tasks. Measurements of brain activity actually reflect a mixture of spontaneous and evoked activities during a specific task. Recently, more and more studies started focusing on tasking-state functional connectivity (ts-FC).
Examples of functional integration
These studies can be cross-validated by attempting to locate and assess patients with lesions or other damage in the identified brain region, and examining whether they exhibit functional deficits relative to the population. This methodology would be hindered by the lack of a “before” baseline measurement, however. The left hand side of Figure 2 shows a segregated situation, where market competition leads to contractual relations between the organisations. In this scenario the duration of commitment and extent of shared decision-making is short-term as a result of the ‘invisible hand’ of market competition [37]. The right hand side shows a full integrated situation, a top-down coordination of organisations. Finally, to improve content validity we held several meetings with researchers in the field to develop and refine our conceptual framework. The lead author reviewed the literature, and catalogued the different conceptual and theoretical concepts. The research team chose the key features of primary care as a base on which to develop a more comprehensive framework.
The macro level: system integration
Functional testing is when you test the system against the functional requirements of the product. Neuroimaging studies of large numbers of these patients could yield brain activation markers for specific psychiatric illnesses, and also aid in the development of therapeutics and animal models.
By integrating the functionality and saving the work steps, the process chains are shortened during further processing. Simply because no pretreatment or plastering is required when making the sandwich panel. Functional integration can lead to material savings, weight reduction by saving components, cost reduction, increased performance, increased reliability, and ease of installation, among other things. The increased reliability and quality of the product can also prevent malfunctions. It is also possible to save on components and thus also minimize material and installation space. Functional integration is therefore a constructive process in which a product can be expanded with additional functions.
As demonstrated, HoFC is a robust feature with a peculiar interior distribution corresponding to the functional hierarchy, which does not follow the general law defined by the spatial distance (Salvador et al., 2005; Stark et al., 2008; Tobyne et al., 2016). Meanwhile, it has been found to correlate with the performance of cognitive tasks, such as visuospatial attention (Gracia-Tabuenca et al., 2018) and executive function (Zhao et al., 2020). As summarized in Table 1, a number of studies have achieved progress in functional integration between the two brain hemispheres by virtue of HoFC measurements under resting state. Functional integration is the study of how brain regions work together to process information and effect responses.
In 2008, Stark et al. (2008) used the Harvard–Oxford Structural Atlas to divide the entire cerebrum into 112 homotopic regions, 56 in each brain hemisphere. They reported a pattern of regional variation in temporally correlated low-frequency brain activity between the two hemispheres, suggesting that interhemispheric coordination may vary across homotopic regions in the human brain. As shown in Figure 2B, despite interhemispheric HoFC across the whole brain regions was robust, higher functional integration definition HoFC value was more exhibited in primary sensorimotor cortices than in higher-order association areas. Therefore, Joliot et al. (2015) developed a functional parcellation based on the intrinsic connectivity of homotopic areas, namely the Atlas of Intrinsic Connectivity of Homotopic Areas (AICHA). This atlas covers the entire cerebral gray matter and includes 192 homotopic region pairs, which has already been used in studies related to HoFC (Tzourio-Mazoyer et al., 2016).
